Leaking Water Heater Repair in Elkhorn, NE

Not every leaking water heater is a dead water heater. Where the water is coming from decides whether this is a twenty-minute fitting repair or a replacement — and we will not guess.

Do this before we arrive

  1. Shut the cold water supply

The valve on the cold inlet at the top of the heater. Turn it fully off.

  2. Kill the energy

Gas: turn the control to OFF. Electric: switch the breaker off. An electric element will destroy itself in minutes if the tank drains below it.

  3. Contain what you can

Towels, a wet vac, move anything that can be damaged. Do not stand in water near an energised electric heater.

  4. Call us

Where the leak is actually coming from

Four things leak on a water heater and only one of them ends the appliance. Water Heater Repair Elkhorn rules them out in this order before saying a word about replacement.

The T&P relief valve

Often repairable. A dripping T&P means the valve has failed, or pressure and temperature in the tank are too high — which is its own problem worth solving.

The drain valve

Usually a cheap fix. Plastic drain valves weep after being opened once for a flush.

Supply connections

Flex connectors, unions and nipples corrode, especially where dissimilar metals meet without a dielectric union.

The tank itself

Not repairable. Once the glass lining fails and the steel perforates, the only fix is a new heater.

Water damage moves fast in a finished basement

Many Elkhorn homes have the heater tucked in a mechanical room off a finished basement. Forty gallons finds carpet, drywall and subfloor quickly, and the mould clock starts inside 48 hours. That is why we treat active leaks as emergency calls rather than next-available appointments.

Frequently asked questions

Is a leaking water heater an emergency?

If water is actively spreading, yes. Shut the cold supply and the gas or breaker, then call. If it is a dried ring you noticed this morning, it still needs looking at this week.

Can a leaking tank be welded or patched?

No. The steel is glass-lined and the lining is what protects it. Once the tank is perforated it is finished — patching it is unsafe and it will fail again.

Why is there water only when the heater runs?

That points at a T&P valve relieving on thermal expansion, or at a condensation issue on a high-efficiency unit. Both are diagnosable in one visit.
