Tankless Water Heater Repair in Elkhorn, NE
A tankless unit tells you what is wrong if you know how to read it. The code on the display narrows the fault to a handful of causes before anyone opens the front panel.

What the common code families mean
- Ignition failure — the unit tried to light and could not prove a flame. Gas supply or pressure, a tired igniter, or a flame rod coated enough to stop sensing.
- Flame loss during operation — it lit and then lost it. Usually gas volume under load, or a venting restriction starving combustion air.
- Overheat and limit codes — nearly always a scaled heat exchanger. The burner is firing normally and the heat simply cannot get into the water fast enough.
- Flow sensor faults — debris or mineral deposit in the turbine housing, so the unit cannot tell how much water is moving and refuses to fire.
- Air supply and exhaust codes — a blocked intake screen, a termination obstructed by nesting or snow, or a failing combustion blower.
- Freeze protection faults — relevant here every winter on units mounted in a garage or an unheated space.
Codes are numbered differently by every manufacturer, so the number on your display matters less than which family it belongs to. Read it out over the phone and we can usually tell you which one you are in before we arrive.
Most of it comes back to scale
A tankless heat exchanger is a narrow passage that the burner heats very hard. Mineral drops out of solution exactly where the water is hottest, so scale forms inside those passages faster than sediment settles in a storage tank.
As the coating thickens, flow drops, outlet temperature swings, the unit works harder for the same result and eventually starts throwing limit codes. Descaling reverses that, which is why Water Heater Repair Elkhorn reaches for a descale kit before quoting parts. Left long enough it stops being reversible and the exchanger itself becomes the repair.
If your unit was fitted without isolation valves, descaling means cutting them in first. We add them as part of the job so the next service is a hose and an hour.
Symptoms that are not faults
A burst of cold mid-shower
The cold-water sandwich: leftover hot in the pipe, then a slug of cold, then hot again as the burner catches up. Normal behaviour, and usually improved by a small buffer tank or a recirculation setup rather than a repair.
It will not fire for a trickle
Every unit has a minimum activation flow. A barely-open tap or a very low-flow fixture may not reach it. That is a specification, not a defect.
A short delay before hot arrives
The burner has to light and the water has to travel. Distance from the unit to the fixture is doing most of that, exactly as it would with a tank.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth repairing a tankless unit or replacing it?
Tankless systems are built to be serviced and most components are replaceable, so repair usually wins well past the point where a tank would be written off. A failed heat exchanger on an older unit is the exception.
How often does one need descaling in Elkhorn?
Annually with local water. Twice a year for a large household with no softener fitted.
Do you work on every brand?
Navien, Rinnai, Noritz, Rheem, Takagi and the rest. The code numbering differs; the underlying failure modes do not.
